About Me

Mr Simon J Fogerty
MBChB, DipSEM(UK), FRCS(Tr&Orth)

Welcome to my website.  I hope you find it contains useful information about shoulder and elbow problems and their treatments.

I am a Consultant Orthopaedic and Trauma Surgeon at The Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust. I have an established private practice at the Spire Elland Hospital, Halifax and the BMI Huddersfield Hospital in Birkby, Huddersfield.

I offer a comprehensive elective (planned care) and trauma, shoulder and elbow service.  I adopt a sensible and practical approach to solving my patients’ problems. I tailor solutions to the individual and ensure that my patients understand and can influence their treatment journey.

I graduated with honours from Sheffield University Medical School.  After a period of surgical training in Sheffield, I moved to West Yorkshire and was appointed to the Yorkshire Orthopaedic Higher Surgical Training Programme based out of Leeds.  During my training, I undertook a Diploma in Sports and Exercise Medicine, gaining an in depth knowledge about the benefits of exercise and the best treatments for injuries in all levels of athlete. This earned me the qualification DipSEM(UK).

At the end of my general orthopaedic training, I undertook a 12 month period of specialist training (fellowship) with world-renowned upper-limb surgeon, Dr Laurent Lafosse MD in Annecy in the French  Alps.  Dr Lafosse was the pioneer of the Arthroscopic Latarjet Procedure (amongst other techniques), this a procedure traditionally done through an open approach but for many reasons is advantageous to perform arthroscopically.  With Dr Lafosse I learnt first-hand the best and most modern approaches to treat shoulder and elbow problems.  Whilst in France I also spent time with Dr Gilles Walch in Lyon, who is widely regarded as the modern-day master of the open Latarjet procedure.  Further upper limb experience was gained when I spent a month in Boston (USA) with Dr JP Warner at Massachusetts General Hospital. MGH was voted the number one hospital facility in the United States in 2012 by the U.S. News & World Report.  Dr JP Warner is a shoulder specialist focusing particularly on revision (second time) joint replacement and tendon/muscle transfers for rotator cuff deficiencies.  On returning to the UK, I benefited greatly from further fellowship experience in Leeds with Mr Roger Hackney, Consultant Shoulder, Elbow and Sports Surgeon.

In the shoulder, I am a specialist in arthroscopic rotator cuff surgery and instability treatments, including the Latarjet procedure (coracoid transfer). I also offer open surgery for conditions around the elbow such as tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) and ulnar nerve entrapment.

I am invited as an expert on many regional and national courses and am involved in the training of trainee surgeons in the Yorkshire region. I am actively involved in audit and research as part of clinical governance within the NHS Trust and have several publications in surgical literature.

PERSONAL

I grew up in the North-West of England and my passion for the outdoors drew me to Yorkshire. I now live locally and have a busy home life with my wife and three children. I enjoy spending time with my family and doing outdoor sports, preferably combining the two.

I enjoy mountain and road biking as well as running, kayaking, windsurfing, water-skiing and snow skiing. In the last decade I have focussed on endurance sports and competitions including the OMM (Original Mountain Marathon) and Adventure Racing. This involves teams of 2 performing multiple outdoor sports normally for a prolonged period / through the night, all in aid of great experiences in amazing surroundings, of which we have many in Yorkshire and the UK. Sometimes these are only retrospectively enjoyable of course (type 2 fun) ! My love for sport and the outdoors means that I have the upmost sympathy for injured sportsmen and women and I aim to treat all patients with the goal of reinstating their pre-injury activity level.
